Locally made 'Gangsterland' looks at St. Paul's hoodlum heritage
If you've ever taken one of those gangster tours of St. Paul, you're the audience for "Gangsterland," an odd but intriguing short film about the city's hoodlum heritage. Bick Smith's handsome, locally made film features actors who address the camera, documentary-style, in the guises of John Dillinger, former St. Paul Police Chief John J. O'Connor and others, to tell the story of the period in the '30s when St. Paul police and notorious gangsters had an agreement that made Minnesota a hotbed of crime. The 41-minute film lacks the polish of bigger-budget efforts, but some of the performances are excellent and you do get a feel for the era, much as you would if you attended a re-enactment at a historic site. The film will be available on DVD starting Friday at gangsterlandmovie.com, and there's a public screening at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the geographically appropriate Historic Mounds Theatre, 1029 Hudson Rd., St. Paul. Tickets are $8. - Chris Hewitt, Twin Cities Pioneer Press
Announcing the world premiere public screening of GANGSTERLAND at the historic Mounds Theater
Meet the gangsters who came to Minnesota in the early 1930’s. Saint Paul had a system which allowed criminals free reign. Alvin “Creepy” Karpis, Edna Murray “The Kissing Bandit,” the Barkers and John Dillinger were among those who made money the old-fashioned way...by stealing it.
In the 40-minute documentary-style movie, “Gangsterland,” Depression-era criminals come back to life as they talk about some of their biggest jobs, toughest situations and their greatest fears. “Gangsterland” captures a dark, chaotic time when the Depression, Prohibition and ruthless outlaws all converged on Minnesota.
A special public showing Wednesday, May 18th - 7pm
Followed by meet and greet with actors and the director Plus, a discussion of the 1930’s gangster era.
Bick Smith receives 2007 "Best large-market hard news story" from the Minnesota Broadcasters Association.
Bick's story is one of three winning entries submitted by the Minnesota News Network.
